Rare footage of the most endangered whale on earth, the North American right whale. I captured this yesterday in the middle of Pacific Ocean, and can’t believe the rainbow created by its spout. These whales were almost whaled to extinction in the 19th century. In the mid 20th century illegal whaling kept the numbers down despite many efforts to resuscitate the population. Having seen a number of whales on our trip so far, I’ve noticed that most whales dive deep upon first sight of our boat. Whereas this whale, the right whale, hovered around the surface and near the boat for hours. We think that’s why they are endangered, and apparently is even where the name came from. Essentially they were the easiest targets in the whaling frenzy of a bygone era. A friend of mine sent me a note that @nrdc has launched a global campaign to save these magical creatures. Let us know if you want photos or footage, we’ve got a bunch now! Pretty stoked we were able to spend a few hours with this guy yesterday. #fromkurilswithlove•••@taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk@jtkerby@tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru999@donreverendo@vnbkam

This trip, to the Kuril Islands has been amazing. Trip of a lifetime. And yet, at times, I’ve struggled with my role on this trip. It’s hard to explain... and frankly I feel guilty even trying because I’m lucky as hell to even be here. But writing can help to clarify the mind so I’ll try.•To be here, on this trip, I needed to take on the role of AC and DIT for the film. For those who don’t know. A good AC is to cinema camera gear what a nascar service team is to a racecar. And DIT’ing is long hours of meticulous computer work, often while the boat goes through rough, vomit inducing waters while everyone else is sleeping. I needed to take on the grunt work, so that the creative team could be more freed up.•The opportunity to work directly with @renan_ozturk overshadowed any hesitations. I consider Renan to be a genius, and having worked with him over ten years ago in Nepal on a trip that very much planted the seed for my pursuit of this adventurous lifestyle, this whole trip seemed like a valuable opportunity for growth. Even if I wasn’t able to take a single photo.•As it turned out I’ve been able to function as second shooter a ton, DITing and ACing whenever possible, and shooting video on a Red Monstro most days. I haven’t taken many photos, which is unusual for me. But perhaps that is the transition. It’s been painful at times, being in the most beautiful zone on earth and not taking many photos. But when I look at the footage the whole team has captured, I do feel a swell of pride having been involved. I think this film could end up being something really special. The select bits of footage are drop-dead gorgeous. Planet earth style. And the story about @bigdaddivladi ‘s 30 year pursuit of scientific research in the area is deeply moving and relevant for the times we live in. •Here’s one photo I did manage to snap, of @chrisburkard, while on the summit of Ushishir island the other day. It was a glorious sunset. •With @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk@jtkerby@tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99@donreverendo@vnbkam

A @chrisburkard special. Chris and I explored the untrodden island of Ushishir yesterday, bushwhacking through chest-high thickets of lush grassy tundra. At times we were grabbing fistfuls of whatever was in reach, climbing near-vertical hillsides. I glissaded down, which actually worked despite all the foliage.•The summit was a spiritual experience. Volcanoes stretching as far as the eye can see. One recently erupted, a few others steaming. The ring of fire on full display. This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen by a long-shot. Feeling blessed that we have been so lucky with the weather, and all other elements combined, bringing us here to document these remote islands. ••@taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk@jtkerby@tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99@donreverendo@vnbkam

We experienced the beauty of life and death yesterday. In the morning we got in the zodiacs and visited a beautiful rookery teaming with healthy sea life, and then traveled to our next destination, a volcanic island that exploded only 3 weeks ago. We believe we are the second people to view the island, the first being the same boat we are on only 2 days after the initial explosion. The island had been the largest fulmar nesting grounds in the pacific, but their nesting grounds were destroyed by the volcano. Once verdant, the island now was covered in ash, with no hope for sea lions or fulmars or puffins or any number of species who used to lived there. As we approached, literally hundreds of thousands of fulmars circled our boat, like a battle scene in a Michael Bay alien invasion style Hollywood movie. It took us some time to realize the fulmars no longer had a home. No longer had nests, and no longer had their young. It was ecologically apocalyptic. Then it started to sink in, how there probably were indicators that the volcano would blow, how it progressed slowly, with pressure building for hundreds if not thousands of years, and then a sudden irreversible phase change. It hit us emotionally how similar this is to climate change for us humans. How phase changes relating to permafrost methane bogs, or ocean acidification, or species extinction, or the Antarctic ice sheet, will undergone geologically and ecologically sudden phase changes, and how we as a species will suffer from it. How these phase changes are already occurring. The metaphor weighed heavy. These images don’t really do justice to the experience, but that’s because we were mostly focused on filming. Looking forward to the day I can share more of the story and footage with everyone. #fromkurilswithlove shot in collaboration with a big team of amazing humans: @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @taylorfreesolo @_ryanhill_ @e_kaspersky @povel @rishisugla @jtjerby @tomorrow_unlocked @kasperskylab

A volcano on a lake, inside the caldera of another volcano, floating on an island in the middle of the pacific. This place is just unreal... setting a timelapse up there the other night, I fell asleep on a lush, cushiony hillside, thinking this must be what heaven feels like.••Internet and computer time are in short supply as we continue our journey across these islands for the next 10 days. Documenting the fragile marine ecosystem with climate change ecologists, and making a documentary film in the process. Making the film is our primary focus, working hard each day with an incredible team of talented friends. ••@chrisburkard @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk@e_kaspersky@povel@jtkerby @rishisugla@_ryanhill_@tomorrow_unlocked

Had to do it. Posting another eclipse shot from @nomadthefilm 😜. ••Many thanks to @sanaamilkshaik And @leowoodall for being such wonderful actors and subjects on this shoot. And to the whole crew involved, everyone worked so hard and we nailed it. They asked me to deliver a movie poster. Maybe this is it? ••En route to Russia now for an exciting film project with @renan_ozturk and @taylorfreesolo ( and @chrisburkard will be there too 🤙). Editing photos from Chile taken a few days ago. My mind and body are a disjointed whirl :)•When I quit my job/career in clean energy a few years ago, I didn’t know what the future held, but I decided it was worth the risk. It felt like I was walking away from everything I had been building towards for my whole life, The totality of my education, and various career steps/decisions. But I took the leap. It’s been hard, with long scary stretches without meaningful work, but it feels good to start hitting a stride of sorts, with a busy schedule of really exciting work all summer. Psyched. ••Thankful to all of you who tune in here and follow my work. Hope you like this one.
