This baby arctic fox was the first to greet us when we landed on Ushishir island. The mother of all these young pups immediately went on the hunt for scraps of food from our camp, cruising around our gear and even walking right over @povel face as he napped in the grass. Without any natural predators on the island they certainly had no fear! ~ @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @jtkerby @tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99 @donreverendo @bigdaddivladi @goalzero @manfrottoimaginemore @loweprobags @sonyalpha #sonyalphafemale #fromkurilswithlove

Yesterday we spanned the spectrum from life to death. A morning of exuberant chaos as we followed marine mammal scientist Vladimir Burkanov to count the sea lion and fur seal populations on a nearby rookery, and then to Raikoke where sadly the sea lion colony did not survive the eruption. There were a few lone males on the rocks but all the females and pups were gone. The colony went from perhaps 1,000 sea lions to 30, if that. It would be impossible for the pups to have survived as they were only a few weeks old and can’t swim. In addition, thousands of birds circled the ash covered terrain in search of spots to build new homes. Against all odds though, life does prevail in any way it can. The first photo is a fur seal pup from a healthy rookery : ) #fromkurilswithlove #survival @chrisburkard @renan_ozturk @jtkerby @tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99 @donreverendo @vnbkam

In the lower left hand corner of this volcano-in-a-craterlake-of-an-older-volcano is a weeeeee little baby volcano. The Kurils are quite literally birthing new earth, up and down this island chain. Where there is intense bringing forth of life, often there is also intense death. The volcano we are headed to as we speak, which we will arrive to in maybe 6 hours, is Raikoke. This volcano erupted a few weeks ago for the first time in 100 years. There was one of the most productive sea lion rookeries on this island with 600 adults and 400 new pups this Spring. Tonight with marine mammal scientist Vladimir Burkanov @vnbkam we will go to check on the colony and his timelapse cameras and see if there is any sign of life. Fingers crossed!!! In the last few decades about 80% of the sea lion population in the Kurils has disappeared and Vladimir is on the quest to understand why. A few hours after we left the port of Petropovlovsky, on our two week journey through the Kuril Islands with a boat of wildlife ecologists and wildminded adventures, we were greeted by a pod of Orcas and their babies. Turning off the engine to idle, they danced around us, popping heads up to say hello. As not to bother them for too long we went to depart, and just then they came right up to the edge of the boat for a few final curious encounters. It’s clear already that this is a place is worth protecting. Many have been working to create Marine Protected Areas in this region and yet there’s a long road ahead for this to become a reality. Stay tuned as the adventure and surveys continue!!! #fromkurilswithlove @tomorrow_unlocked @kasperskylab @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @tedhesser @_ryanhill_ @povel @rishisugla @jtkerby @e_kaspersky @ollyru999 @sonyalpha #sonyalphafemale

“What are you doing?” -me ~~. “Listening to your heartbeat.” -renan ~~. “Any particular reason?” ~~. “Not really. It goes thump thump. Thump thump.” ~~. “That fast?” ~~. “Yea. Crazy. I guess it’s going to thump like this without missing a beat for the rest of your life. For years and years until we’re old. Until it slows, or stops. Makes me realize life is pretty fragile actually. Like, it all depends on this.” #heartbeats @renan_ozturk

How unbelievably hard is it to talk about the environment and about being human when we constantly feel wrong? When we are worried about saying the wrong thing, or not knowing enough... When the nuances get ever more complex, when there are many and even conflicting sides of “good”, and where there is endless good in the bad, and bad in the good. Most of us really want a healthy, life-sustaining and socially just relationship with the planet but what that means is constantly shifting. ~ ~This is my friend Lauren. She’s pretty much my hero. You might think we would be sword fighting to the death right now because we also on very interesting sides of a very interesting conundrum. I’m working to investigate and bring light to the impacts of lithium mining fueled by the demand for electric vehicles through an upcoming film. Meanwhile Lauren (since leaving D.C. where she ushered the Paris Agreement thru with Obama and was a climate negotiator for the U.S. State Department) is a senior policy advisor to the California Air Resources Board where she spearheads projects to reduce public risk to air pollution and lower California’s green house gas emissions. Electric cars are her JAM! Quite literally, we both love mama earth with all our hearts and yet our work has conflicting fundamental elements in it. And ya know what? This is not only “ok” but it’s a beautiful kaleidoscope of dialogue and reality with its complex definitions of the problem and variant but converging pathways towards solutions. I remember how scared I was initially to talk to Lauren about the lithium issue as if I was going to cross a sacred line of environmentalism. But this brilliant and beautiful earth warrior embraced me and the situation I’m investigating with love and curiosity. We’re all in it together. The message I want to send is I truly wish that anyone who is feeling hesitant to engage more deeply in conversations about our environment feel more safe to do so. You don’t have to be “right” and you most certainly don’t have to be perfect. All we have to do is do this **together** .... across all spectrums of beliefs and vantage points. That’s where the fun is : ) @sonyalpha @goalzero

This past February, the indigenous people of northern Argentina blocked a major highway in an effort to secure meetings with the local government and stop or slow the development of lithium mining which will deplete their drinking water and destroy this fragile ecosystem. Today I saw the news that French mining company Eramet announced it’s been approved to develop a lithium mine in Argentina, just to the south of where these individuals live but bound to affect other communities in the same way. Eramet has put down half a billion dollars to begin its projects, keying into the lithium boom and demand for electric vehicles. In 2017, before I got involved with this issue, Renan and I purchased an electric car thinking it would be one way we could help the planet. But the more I learn, the more I realize that with how unregulated and unsustainable lithium mining can be in places like Chile and Argentina, or cobalt mining and how it’s fueling conflict and child labor rates in DR Congo, I’m convinced we cannot go on thinking that electric cars are an effective or just solution to climate change. From a carbon emissions standpoint, the benefits are highly contested. From an environmental and social impact standpoint, the devastation is irreparable. ~ Thinking of my friends there today and hoping that as a planet we will demand protection for these people as much as we demand clean air for ourselves. @rishisugla @pablo_durana @choco_gabriel_de_la_mora @renan_ozturk

Creativity comes through abrasion. Sometimes if you just throw yourself against everything you thought was impossible, the energy arises for the ‘possible’ to - against all odds - appear as an option. Out of nowhere. It’s magic. I don’t understand physics but I imagine some very smart people would have some smart things to say here. Maybe I’ll leave it to them to fill in. Big love to one of many friends and mentors in this spirit, @jaredleto. Photo taken during his #greatwideopen summer of granite climbing and joyous exploration into the human heart and history of conservation in Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Yosemite and Mato Tipila (Devil’s Tower).
