kcdeane Man you guys look like you’re in the sickest spot!

roam This place is blowing minds.

Yesterday
Meet Vladimir Burkanov (@bigdaddivladi), Russian marine mammal biologist badass who has worked in northern waters for over 30 years. Truth be told he hitch-hiked aboard our boat last minute in order to check for surviving life at his long term research site after the recent eruption. He has been fully sleeping in the hallway as a stowaway... ~Slowly but surely his gregarious personality and deep knowledge of this place has brought new meaning to this #fromkurilswithlove film. ~@chrisburkard shot this powerful portrait of him as we cruised in the zodiac toward the Riakoke volcano blast site, in a surreal silver light diffused by the still steaming caldera and clouds of homeless fulmar birds. This was the heavy moment he realized that none of the sea lion pup had survived. @taylorfreesolo @jtkerby @tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99 @donreverendo @vnbkam

For some places you can ‘love it to death’ by overexposing it via social media. In the case of this #FromKurilsWithLove film, I thought that may be the case as well so it’s a question we have asked many times to the local director of @WWF in this region and Vladimir Burkanov (@bigdaddivladi), the leading scientist who is with us. The response is the same every time: This region needs tourism instead of extractive industries and particularly it needs more funding for ongoing research and protection. The images we are creating are specifically working toward that. This island, Ushishir, as well as many others deserves to be a full on @UNESCO world heritage site. @taylorfreesolo @jtkerby @tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru99 @donreverendo @vnbkam

The #FromKurilsWithLove film magical mystery tour of the Kuril Islands continues in Ushishir Island. As the rest of the team recovered in the hot springs @_ryanhill_ and I swam breast strokes through the wet chest-high tundra grass along the rim of the caldera trying to catch up with @chrisburkard @tedhesser who had left earlier for a summit sunset. Along the way we stopped to shoot this timelapse, the fog ripping across the frame... ~Exploring Ushishir island has been a true privilege and sparked a lot of deeper conversations amongst the team, a stark contrast from the destruction of Riakoke the day before. As it turns out the rich life and drop dead beauty of the Kuril Islands also has its foil of pure destruction. Yesterday experienced Raikoke volcano as some of the first humans to set foot on it since the recent eruption, an event that turned the lush green island into an ashy wasteland overnight. Besides one of largest Fulmar bird breeding grounds it was a big marine mammal rookery that @vnbcam has been studying for nearly 30 years with long term time-lapse cameras installed. He shook with anticipation as @_ryanhill_ flew the first drone flight toward the devastation, hoping to see if any of the sea lion pups survived. We didn’t find any. All this coupled by the hundreds of thousands of fulmars circling their former home, with many others dead on the shores. The imagery (@chrisburkard @jtkerby and myself) and conversations it sparked (captured by @taylorfreesolo and @tedhesser @rishisugla ) between team members will certainly be an important story beat in this #fromKurilsWithLove film that is slowly taking on greater meaning. As we left the island the still steaming caldera caught the last light in an awe inspiring blaze. On to the next island teeming with life and epic visuals... ~ See @tomorrow_unlocked for more updates from the ship’s sat modem.

The dream is real! Lots of team work, suffering with back wrenching loads, and a once in a lifetime weather window all came together for us to shoot Onekatan yesterday here in the remote Kuril Islands. We gave it everything we had for 40 hours, with very little sleep, food and water, experiencing the highest highs and lowest lows (see @chrisburkard’s current post about his drone). At this point we are feeling some heavy afterglow that will last a lifetime! ~Currently we are all safe back on the boat headed south with a marine mammal expert @vnbkam who had decades of experience studying marine mammals in this region to witness he aftermath of a recent volcanic eruption that might have wiped out a sea lion rookery and one of his long term time-lapse cameras. Vladimir said that sea lions populations are down by 80% since the 1980’s and he is working hard to figure out the reasons why. Stay tuned... #fromKurilsWithLove@taylorfreesolo @jtkerby@tedhesser @rishisugla @tomorrow_unlocked @e_kaspersky @povel @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @ollyru999 @donreverendo

Our tiny vessel (center frame) cutting through the hot volcanic outwash mixed with the cold northern waters from the sea of Okokhtsk. Feels good to be underway on this #FromKurilsWithLove expedition, a sea passage through the remote Kuril Islands in between northern Japan and Kamchatka, Russia. We have quite the team of talented storytellers, scientist communicators and global cyber security experts to help share the story of this place. A ‘russian roulette’ frame. One technique that I experimented with to get more some immersive yak shots was to put my @sonyalpha in the middle of the trial on time-lapse mode shooting a frame every second, as I hid behind a rock and cringed, waiting for the sound of it getting crushed. Luck of the draw! #photogamble #yak #everestmystery @natgeo @thenorthface

Honestly before this expedition I’ve been very anti-Everest. Yet during the trip I had a bit of a transformation in the way that I thought about this (billion dollar?) climbing industry. Part of that process was this experiment with an interactive portrait series to focus on the shared excitement, kindness and spirit of exploration present in all those collaborating for the summit. On the trail I went up to almost every person - yak driver, client, porter, guide with an enthusiast fist bump [🤜 🤛] with my camera spraying photos at the same time. Some of these moments would end in full on embrace, laughter or other hilarious variations of camaraderie. Not once was I denied. The kinship across so many nationalities and roles seemed unbreakable and true. Moments of humanity at it finest. #everestmystery @natgeo @sonyalpha @thenorthface ~ @m_synnott @thom.dharma.pollard @irving_matthew @nickkalisz @jimhurst @jamie8848 @prakashkemchay
