A mother sea lion nurses her pup on Brat Chirpoev Island in the Kurils. This rookery is vibrant and full of new life, a stark contrast to the desolation of Raikoke Island. On cold days the pups will clamber on top of their mothers to stay warm. Vladimir Burkanov (@bigdaddivladi) has watched these animals for decades, and now has new insights via a high tech time-lapse camera network that run year round. #FromKurilsWithLove @renan_ozturk @taylorfreesolo @chrisburkard @rishisugla @tedhesser @_ryanhill_ @povel @e_kaspersky @kasperskylab @ollyru999 @alejandroarango13 @tomorrow_unlocked

Ushishir Island is a natural wonder of shapes, colors, and geology. Hot springs spew sulphuric steam into the air from the inner rim of the volcanic caldera (right side of image) as mineralized soil erodes into the Pacific on its outer coast. Russian marine scientist Vladimir Burkanov (@bigdaddivladi) took @taylorfreesolo and I on a zodiac trip around the island, revealing not only incredible natural textures, but also signs of its rich human past - from the Ainu that were native to this region to the seal and otter hunters of the late 19th century. Now the island is empty of people apart from the occasional visitor. The view in this photo was short lived, as fog reclaimed the skies after a one day reprieve - more the norm than an exception here. We’re on to new destinations now, but this place will forever be burned into my memory. #FromKurilsWithLove For more views from Ushishir and the Kurils check out @chrisburkard @renan_ozturk @taylorfreesolo @tedhesser @_ryanhill_ @rishisugla @alejandroarango13 @ollyru999 @povel @e_kaspersky @kasperskylab @tomorrow_unlocked

An arctic fox eating an auklet on Ushirshir Island in Russia’s Kurils. There are are so many birds roosting on the island that it takes several hours for their flocks to pass in and out of the natural bay. The islands foxes were introduced by the Japanese many decades ago, and despite it being a small island, they certainly do not lack food. #FromKurilsWithLove For more shots from our journey follow along with @tomorrow_unlocked and the team (@tedhesser got some sick fox shots, chem them out!) including @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @rishisugla @_ryanhill_ @povel @ollyru999 @alejandroarango13 @kasperskylab @vnbkam @e_kaspersky

We saw this cave earlier in the day, but it was transformed into an unworldly scene at sunset. We arrived a few minutes late on the zodiac, but caught enough of the fireworks to see deep into the soul of Ushirshir Island. #FromKurilsWithLove Follow the journey along with @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @tedhesser @rishisugla @e_kaspersky &_ryanhill_ @ollyru999 @povel @alejandroarango13 @kasperskylab @tomorrow_unlocked

Raikoke Island is an ashen hellscape. Just a few weeks ago, Russian scientist @vnbkam surveyed the sea lion population for pups on a green, vibrant Raikoke. Now he says they are all likely dead, buried under meters of ash. Violent volcanic eruptions continue, sending hundreds of thousands of the islands birds to the sky. Despite the desolation, there are already signs of life returning. Life in the Kurils is harsh. #FromKurilsWithLove For more follow along with my crew mates @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @tedhesser @taylorfreesolo @_ryanhill_ @rishisugla @povel @e_kaspersky @ollyru999 @alejandroarango13 @kasperskylab @tomorrowunlocked

The Kurils are mind-blowing. So is our luck. This volcano-in-a-lake (itself part of a larger volcano) on the island of Onekotan is only free of fog a few days a year. We nabbed two of them! 36 hours that will be forever seared into my memory. This drone panorama is a stitch of three images, though amongst our group we gathered hundreds more epic shots. Now we’re off to the next destination in choppier seas... #FromKurilsWithLove Follow along with the rest of the incredibly strong team: @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @tedhesser @rishisugla @e_kaspersky @_ryanhill_ @ollyru999 @povel @alejandroarango13 @kasperskylab @tomorrow_unlocked

First orca sighting en route to the Kuril Islands, an archipelago that connects Russia and Japan. One of the most difficult places in the world to access, these waters are unprotected yet imperiled by plastic pollution. #FromKurilsWithLove With @taylorfreesolo @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @e_kaspersky @tedhesser @rishisugla @_ryanhill_ @alejandroarango13 @povel @tomorrow_unlocked @kasperskylab

The science team is in! Later this summer I’ll be joining @teamshrub on Qikiqtaruk-Herschel Island with support from @insidenatgeo. This island is a 100sq km chunk of permafrost rising out if the Arctic Ocean. You can imagine what that looks like in a summer where the sea ice was gone MONTHS ahead of time (this year) compared with cooler summers. Plenty of mist and long walks amongst the driftwood soon to come. But before that, I have a bit of a stop-over in Russia for a very different project...stay tuned for... #FromKurilsWithLove Only one missed bus so far!

Warm light in a cool place. A few of my Russian colleagues pause for the camera during a research expedition to Yamal, Siberia. Looking forward to getting back to Russia soon! @insidenatgeo #Yamal #HUMANOR #Arctic #Siberia #Russia #Tundra
