⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀F I N N O F T H E F E L L S⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It occurred to me recently that I have very few photos of my bestest walking buddy. So here she is, @finn.of.the.fells, in all her wooferty glory; surrounded by dead heather on Lingmoor Fell. You'll sometimes see young Finnius in my YouTube vlogs where, let's be honest, she's the star of the show.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And that reminds me: heather season is almost upon us once more, yay! 🙌⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Hope you're all getting out 'n' about this weekend, despite the forecast. I'd love to know what you're all up to.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Remember: there's no such thing as 'bad weather', just bad clothing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀D R I F T E R⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I know it's the middle of summer and I know I say this every year but HOT DIGGITY DOG, I can't WAIT for these conditions again! ❄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It's always a good idea to glance back from time to time. The grand mountain views were ahead of me but had I not stopped and looked back I'd have missed this view.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It's probably a good life philosophy too, actually. When we're striving for that amazing goal ahead it's very easy to forget about where we are and how far we've come; how beautiful - and sometimes terrible - that journey has been.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Hope you've all got some fun-packed plans this weekend. I'm meeting up with my fellow Everest trekking buddies in Langdale for a couple of days in the fells so I'm super-excited! No doubt there'll be a few sneaky stories so keep an eye out 😀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#fromlakelandwithlove

As you walk around this island you're under constant attack from a gazillion arctic terns, being hosed down with poo and unable to breath properly due to the putrid stench that literally burns your nostrils - all the while trying not to step on nests that have been carefully built right along the walkways!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We go back every year and simply wouldn't have it any other way. The pecked head and burnt nostrils are worth bearing witness to this incredible bird extravaganza!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Welcome to the Farne Islands! 🖤⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And if you decide to visit make sure you sail with Andrew and the gang at Serenity (@farne_islands) - they're the best and they also look after your 4-legged friends on the boat while you're being pecked to death on the island!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This is Pedro, by the way. He's a pro model that chatted away while I positioned my off-camera light (the sun) and popped off a few shots for his portfolio. He's off to Iceland in a few weeks for another modelling shoot - hope he gets himself a yellow jacket for dem waterfall shots 😁

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀T H E H A N D O F N E C R O S⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀If you were to ask a geologist to explain what formed the sharp ridges and deep valleys around Helvellyn the answer would probably involve words such as “pyroclastic flow” and “glacial erosion”.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But they’d be wrong. About the glacial erosion, at least.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀You see, millions of years ago, long before the last ice age and even longer before the world of men, there was a tremendous discord amongst the earth’s inhabitants. Great beings that ruled mighty kingdoms whose history spanned countless millennia. A history that came to a very sudden end leaving no trace of ever existing. Unless you know where to look. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The final battle took place at the edge of the world. Necros, the Black King, God of the shadows and all things that crawl and bite, rode forth with his three daughters leading an army that decimated all before it with fire and frenzied malevolence. Nothing could stop the Black King and the Three. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Except, in a strange and unexpected twist, it was the three daughters that brought about the end of the great war. Enthralled by an unseen ancient magic, they rounded on their father toppling him from his horse. They bound him with chains and galloped towards the edge of the world, dragging him behind them before leaping into the void. For a few moments Necros clung to the world; fingers gouging enormous troughs in the land leaving behind narrow precipitous ridges of rock. The nail of his third finger tore off and filled the deep gouge with blood and formed what is now called Red Tarn.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In the moment before he fell there was a cataclysmic crack as a large piece of land was cleaved from the world. The Black King, who had wanted dominion over the world, had unwittingly pulled his kingdom of horror away from it; adrift in the ocean. Thus ended the reign of Necros. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Skip ahead a few million years and that island is now the United Kingdom. But are we truly free of the Black King or does he continue to hold dominion over us? On our island adrift and alone we suffocate our land with garbage and spread our plastic pestilence into the seas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We are the army of Necros.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀G O O S E D⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Phewie, it's been a pretty hectic few days and I've finally come to rest....until next weekend! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀From vlogging on Striding Edge at 4 in the morning to riding a narrow gauge steam train with a belly full of beer 🍻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I've got a ton of mountain photos to post but I haven't had the time to get them ready, I'm sorry. And I still haven't replied to all your lovely comments on previous photos and for that I'm REALLY sorry! I seriously need to figure out a way to clone myself to get things done. Though the world could definitely do without that 😂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Anyhoo, here's a la'al gosling from a few weeks ago somewhere near Richmond, North Yorkshire. The composition is utter crud as it was a split second of a moment when I spotted these guys under a bush. Please be gentle 🙈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I really hope you've all had a BRILLIANT weekend; I'd love to know what you've been up to!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀N E V E R W A L K A L O N E⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀For the devil shall walk beside thee.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It’s June 1966 and the weather is hot and humid in Lakeland. Thunderstorms sweep across the fells, dumping vast amounts of rain; causing the ghylls to swell.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Most of the local farmers are bringing their sheep back down from the mountains ‘til the storms pass. One such farmer is Bob Hodgson. He and his lad, Will, are high above the fell wall one day herding the stragglers from the crags. It’s routine work albeit at an unusual time of year. But the routine soon comes to an abrupt and grisly end. What they found that day shook them and the world to its core.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As they walked across the bottom of a very high crag they found a tatty old backpack. Then some boots in the same condition. A few meters away were what looked like the remains of clothes; torn into a thousand pieces and scattered over the long grass. But no sign of their owner. It was Will who saw it first. Bob saw his son’s eyes widen and his skin turn the colour of ash.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Continues in the comments section....⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#fearthelakes

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀R E D⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀With the deepest lake, the highest mountain and one of the most iconic columns of rock in England it's not really very surprising why this is such a Mecca for those who love the outdoors; a place where we can seek nourishment for the soul.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Watching sunsets here is a truly spiritual experience. Especially when you're utterly alone with just the sound of the breeze in the grass and the odd bleat of a distant sheep.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀Welcome to Wasdale.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This was taken on my descent from Great Gable whilst out vlogging earlier this year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ S M I L E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s not really very surprising that herdies smile all the time. Let’s face it, they get to live amongst the ghylls and crags in arguably the most beautiful place on planet Earth. When I die I want to come back as a herdy. Not one of those pristine herdies you see in the valleys - nooooo, I’d like to come back as one of those raggedy looking dudes you see perched on tiny ledges trying to reach those delicious juniper trees. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This herdy was actually in very good condition right at the top of Sca Fell and she didn’t know whether she was coming or going which gave me plenty of time to compose a shot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here’s a question for you: if you could come back as any animal what would it be and why? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀S T A R W O R S H I P P E R S⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Humans have worshipped the sun since the very beginning, with many cultures believing it to be their one true God ☀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In ancient Egypt the sun god was Ra who was believed to cross the sky each day in his solar chariot. The Aztec sun god was Huitzilopochtli who demanded regular human sacrifices. In ancient Japanese mythology the sun goddess Amaterasu was believed to be the supreme ruler of the world. The Romans celebrated the feast of Sol Invictus meaning 'Unconquered Sun' on the 25th December every year which was later adopted by Christianity as Christmas.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The stories about the sun and our relationship with it are fascinating and entertaining but I find the following facts even more so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Our sun is a main sequence Yellow Dwarf that is 4.5 billion years old. The surface temperature is over 5000 degrees celsius and one day it will expand into the solar system, consuming the Earth before shrinking back down to the same size as the Earth. It will then be a White Dwarf but still have the same mass as it has today. We'll be long gone by then though!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In case you haven't lost the will to live after reading all that, this was taken from Dale End near Little Langdale looking east towards Black Fell as Ra began his chariot ride across the sky. The trees worshipping their god and life-giver.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#fromlakelandwithlove ⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T O B L E R O N E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hands up who loves that delicious triangular Swiss chocolate that nearly breaks your teef when you bite a piece off 🙋🏻‍♂️ Two hands up if you’re able to polish off a jumbo bar a single sitting 🙌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This right here is the Matterhorn in Switzerland; probably the most iconic mountain in the world. If you asked a kid to draw a mountain, this is what they'd draw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s exactly a year since we stood and stared at this colossus of a mountain. Part of me fantasised about climbing it and standing on the very narrow summit and the other part of me slapped me in the face and told me to stop being stupid and get another beer 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Switzerland is somewhere I’d love to return and go for full-day hikes on the high trails. But then there’s the Dolomites and the Julian Alps; so many places to go and so little time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What location is ranked number 1 on your list of places to visit? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromswitzerlandwithlove

Go on, I dares ya 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's been another very busy week which means I've had absolutely no time to think of a daft pointless story to accompany this post. It also feels like an age since I was out in the fells and shots like this just make me miss them even more. Next week I'm going to get amongst them. Maybe even a mini expedition. And a vlog. Hang about, that's getting outrageous now 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking forward to tomorrow's From Lakeland with Love Instameet. It looks like the weather will be terrible but that's what the Lakes is all about. This spirit can't be crushed by a bit of wind and rain ☔ 🌧️💪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

Sure the scenery was incredible, but it was the gorgeously beautiful people I spent it with that made it. @will.holligan, @sophierowles_ and @jenfish504 are the bestest pals anybody could ever ask for......and top photographers to boot, check 'em out if you don't follow them already!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromscotlandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀T H E T W I N S⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I tracked these two for 6 days and 6 nights across precipitous mountains and expansive valleys; never quite seeing them fully. Just their tracks and the occasional fleeting glimpse of a black woolly bottom disappearing around the corner of a crag or crest of grassy hillock.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀OK, they were actually just trotting in front of me on the path for about 5 minutes a few months ago, but that doesn't seem very dramatic does it. They're a couple of beauties, though, that's for sure⁣ 🖤⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It's been a weird ol' week. From Thursday afternoon until midday on Saturday I switched my phone off completely whilst yomping around the Langdales on the #mountainleadertraining exped. It's probably the longest I've ever been without my phone and out of contact with the whole world. And you know what? It's was alright. No, it was great, actually!⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I'd love to know what you guys have been up to this weekend. Any Lakeland adventures?⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#fromlakelandwithlove⁣⁣⁣⁣
